A monthly website plan, or just a one-time build?
Pay once and own it, or pay monthly and have it handled? Both are legitimate. Here is how to tell which one you actually are, and exactly what each option does and does not cover.
Before choosing a website plan, it helps to separate two decisions: who builds the site, and who looks after it once it is live. You can hire someone for the first without committing to the second.
The short answer
A one-time build is probably enough if:
- your site rarely changes, beyond a price or hours update now and then;
- you or someone you trust can look after a hosting account and a domain renewal;
- you'd rather pay for small changes when they come up than carry a monthly bill;
- you don't need ongoing help showing up in local Google searches, perhaps because most of your work comes from referrals or you already manage your Google Business Profile yourself.
A monthly plan is probably worth it if:
- your site changes with the seasons, events or menus;
- you don't want to be the person who finds out it's down;
- you've needed a small edit before and couldn't reach whoever built it;
- you want someone actively working on how you show up in local search.
The rest of this page explains what each path really involves, so you can check that answer.
You own the site either way
Your site is yours once the build is paid for — domain, files and content — whether or not you ever take a monthly plan. The monthly fee is a service fee for work that continues after launch. It is not rent on your own website, and it is not a condition of ownership. Plans are month-to-month after launch: cancel with 30 days' notice, no early-cancellation fee, and we hand off what you need to host it elsewhere.
If you choose no monthly plan, offboarding includes the site files and a guide tailored to setup, editing, publishing and backups. You can make changes yourself or use another provider, but file editing may need technical help. An editing dashboard and its training are separately scoped and priced; they aren't included automatically.
What "just a one-time build" really involves
A one-time build is a real option, and for some businesses it is the right one. It does mean these things land on you:
- Hosting and the domain. Both need an account, a payment method that does not expire, and a renewal nobody forgets. Expired domains are one of the more painful, entirely avoidable ways a small business goes offline.
- Keeping things working. A simply built site has less that needs regular patching than many sites do, and many hosts renew the security certificate (the padlock) automatically. But someone still has to check that the contact form still reaches your inbox, that any booking or payment tools still connect, and that the hosting account is in good order.
- Backups. Having a copy of the site somewhere that is not the same server as the site.
- Changes. New prices, new hours, a staff change, a seasonal photo. Either you learn to make these edits, or you find someone each time and pay for a small job at short notice.
- Noticing. If the site goes down on a Saturday, someone has to find out before Monday.
None of this is exotic. It is just work that does not go away, and it is worth deciding deliberately who does it rather than discovering the answer later.
What our two monthly plans cover
Website Upkeep & SEO — $750/month
- Included: hosting, security, backups, uptime monitoring and the technical upkeep your setup needs, plus ongoing local search work: Google Business Profile management, local search pages and fixes, review-request tools set up for you, and phone-link clicks and accepted form submissions, where configured, with a plain-English monthly report. Content work that's part of the local search work is never billed as extra.
- Not included (quoted separately): content changes you ask for, quoted as they come up.
- Good to know: we set up the review-request tools; asking your customers stays with you. Nobody else can credibly do that part.
Website Upkeep, SEO & Updates — $1,200/month
- Included: everything above, plus your ongoing content updates: text, prices, hours, contact details, photos, links and documents within your existing pages, layouts and features, and routine gallery or catalog updates. Send as many requests as you like and we work through them one at a time.
- Not included (quoted separately): new pages, major layout or design changes, new features or integrations, substantial new content, and bulk catalog work.
- Good to know: if you're on the $750 plan, you can add content updates for $450/month, which brings you to the same $1,200 plan. Content updates aren't sold without it.
Reporting identifies what each metric counts: a phone-link click is not a connected call, and an accepted form submission does not confirm inbox delivery or a qualified opportunity.
Over a year, that is $9,000 for Website Upkeep & SEO or $14,400 with content updates included. We don't offer hosting on its own: if you don't take a plan, your finished site is handed over for you to host elsewhere, which is a perfectly workable choice.
Nothing extra is ever done or billed without your OK: before any work you ask for, we confirm what it involves, when it will be done and whether your plan covers it. Anything outside your plan is priced for your approval first. Routine upkeep and local search work just happens, as agreed in your plan.
A monthly plan is optional on a site we build. If someone else built your site, it is not automatically eligible — we review its setup and condition first, then put the scope and price in writing.
What we will not promise
No monthly plan, ours included, can guarantee rankings, calls or revenue. Be wary of anyone who says theirs does. Upkeep keeps a site healthy and current. The local search work is ongoing effort on your local presence, and how it goes depends on your market, your competitors and your own follow-through. What you get either way is the work itself, done and reported, not a promised outcome.
